SPORTSGUIDE MAGAZINE Editorial and Advertising Consultant for the events based publication, SportsGuide Magazine………… NIKE ACG and XTERRA NZ I worked as a Sales and Marketing consultant in New Zealand, selling NIKE ACG apparel and footwear. The company that I work for also had the license rights to market the XTERRA brand of footwear and apparel in NZ and Australia. My tasks were to create new markets for both NIKE ACG and XTERRA in NZ and build the brands to the best of my ability. TRIATHLON NEW ZEALAND I worked on a consultancy basis for Triathlon New Zealand on a youth development project within the Auckland Region. This job description had me charged with developing the sport of triathlon amongst all the schools within this region. Daily activities included visiting schools, delivering talks, hosting and staging triathlon/duathlon workshops as well as attending all regional school triathlon events. HIGH PERFORMANCE PROGRAM I was successful in implementing a high performance triathlon program into NZ’s largest government school, Rangitoto College. They run a HP program but had not included triathlon in the school set-up until I approached them with a proposal to implement the program and manage it. 2009 is the 1st year that Triathlon has featured in the schools high level sports tier. This would be the most successful project I have managed to work on in NZ
SQUAD COACHING, TRAINING CAMPS and ONLINE COACHING I have managed to build in some NZ experience regards coaching:
BRAND MANAGEMENT As a professional athlete, I have had the opportunity to work with and learn from a variety of brand managers over the years in a number of areas. Most notably from this fact is that I now have the necessary field experience to accompany me as I slot into a future corporate role within an organisation. Brand Management hands-on experience (based on sponsorship relationships) includes working with the following corporate companies on an on-going basis over the past 10 years plus.
As a sponsored Adidas athlete, I had the privilege to work with them on a range of new shoe launches plus road shows doubling as event and race expositions over the years. This has also involved testing shoes on their behalf for possible launch into the SA market amongst other duties. My ties with Adidas SA have spanned a period of 9yrs from 1997 up to and including 2008.
Cadbury’s Schweppes in South Africa produce a nutritional drink supplement under the brand name ENERGADE (official drinks supplier of Springbok Rugby and Cricket in SA). As a sponsored athlete of theirs that spanned a decade, I had the opportunity to work closely with the brand management team on new product launches, road shows, clinics and motivational and guest speaking duties. This invaluable experience has given me insight into the buying market and what is potentially required to market current and new products successfully.
When Nestle bought out the American nutritional company POWERBAR, I was hands on involved in the launch of the product range into the South African market via my own professional triathlon team. I worked with the brand manager on launching the product to the multi sport market with back-up advertising and promotional activities that followed.
Apart from the above-mentioned companies, I have also had the opportunity to learn from a variety of other sources that have all contributed to ensuring that I have the necessary skills, aptitude and drive to ensure that I am successful. They include: Nike SA The life of a professional athlete is a very rewarding one but it is also a long hard road that requires plenty of sacrifice, commitment and dedication. I firmly believe that by having to resort to selling “myself” successfully as a brand and practicing the sport at the very highest level, I have inherited the necessary life skills needed to perform a superb job role function.
SPONSORSHIP MANAGEMENT Apart from my own personal sponsorship procurement activities, I have gained experience on a corporate sponsorship level as well. From managing a budget, coming up with new and innovative ideas right through to implementation, I have hands-on experience when it comes to dealing with sponsorship mgt.
Managed and implemented a sponsorship budget for a professional triathlon team from 1999 – 2002
Managed budget and expenses for sporting events that I organised as early as MAY 2006. MARKETING/ADVERTISING AND COMMUNICATIONS As a pro triathlete for the past 12 yrs, living and working conditions in South Africa have always demanded that I have alternate sources of income to supplement my monthly expenses. Having established my own advertising, marketing and communications company back in 1995, my below the line agency has ensured that I have gained the practical knowledge of running a small business concern. This is a definite plus in favour of my overall skills geared towards securing an employment opportunity. Practical experience includes
SALES and MARKETING Before turning professional athlete, I started out my career at a sports publishing company. The stable of magazines included sports covering running, multi sport and soccer. My main job function as sales and promotions manager for the multi sport publication was as follows: Responsible for procuring new and maintaining current advertising clients.

We imported the following brands into South Africa over a period of 2 years after being appointed official Southern Africa Distributors
This business involved importing, marketing and selling of the above mentioned products to the South African consumers PROPERTY CONSULTANT I have some good experience in the property development field. I worked as a consultant in a sales role for a $150 Million Dollar development project in South Africa. The role was primarily sales based with customer relations as an add-on. EVENT MANAGEMENT From conceptualisation right through to implementation, I have managed to carry my experience of racing over into event staging. I recently undertook to host the South African National Long Course Triathlon Championships. Job functions consisted of securing sponsorship, marketing the event, taking entries, answering queries and finally, on the day management to ensure the smooth running of the whole event. Apart from this event, I have also managed to work with a host of other race directors both locally and internationally to promote their respective events.
